Cartoon cat with sweets on a foot

Other · Mixed · Photo

A cartoon cat with a round head and whiskers sits across the top of a foot, beside a figure in a blue outfit standing on a pink and grey checkered floor. Loose black linework is combined with soft pink, blue, yellow and purple washes, with lollipops, cupcakes and wrapped candies scattered around the design. The composition wraps diagonally over the foot, with the pale skin and cat's face as the central focus.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The jar on the top shelf had been Pudding's problem since the Tuesday the shop changed hands, and by Thursday she had a plan. It involved the step-ladder, a folded tea towel and the particular stillness of a cat who is definitely not up to anything. She sat on the counter for an hour without blinking while the rain tapped the glass and the new owner, Mr Oduya, counted change into a tin.

He had kept old Gwen's checkerboard floor, the pink and grey squares scuffed pale by sixty years of shoes, and he had kept the lollipops, the wrapped toffees and the cupcakes with their stiff little paper cases. What he had not kept was any idea how many toffees went missing each morning. He blamed the draught. He blamed the girl who came in after school. Pudding, meanwhile, was tucking a striped lollipop under her chin like a trumpet and wondering whether the sugar would last until closing.

On Friday he came down early and found a trail of wrapped candies leading from the sweet jar to the door, each one nudged neatly onto a square of the floor. At the end of it sat Pudding, perfectly innocent, whiskers damp with strawberry. He looked at her for a long moment, then went behind the counter and came back with a pink cupcake on a saucer.

He set it down beside her and said, 'Fair's fair. Leave the top shelf for the customers.' She ate it without a word. The bell over the door gave its small ring, and by the time he turned around there was nothing left on the floor but one blue sweet wrapper, folded into the shape of a cat.
