Wand and Expecto Patronum script on upper back
Lettering · Back · Mixed · Photo
A grey shaded wand runs diagonally across the upper back, ending in a cloud of blue swirls and small sparkles. The words Expecto Patronum sit in black cursive script over the blue flourishes. The wand uses soft greyscale shading with a black outline, while the blue ink is applied in light, airy linework and dots against the skin.

The ewes had got into the turnips again, and Marjorie Pell was standing in the lane in her wellingtons with one boot full of snow, shouting at a border collie who had decided the whole business was a game. Her brother Dai came over the stile with a torch that had died in his pocket and said nothing, which was how she knew he was going to be useful. They got the flock back through the gap by half past four, the light going purple over Cold Hanger, and she had her hands on her knees, breathing like a bellows, when the old wand came out of his coat.

It was their grandmother's, a length of ash with knobbed joints, and nobody in the family had ever been sure whether she had bought it from a catalogue or a jumble sale in Ludlow. Dai had carried it since the funeral because he said it was the only thing she'd left that didn't need feeding. He held it out now, sheepish, and said the silly thing they used to say at the bottom of the orchard when they were nine and the bull was in the far field.
Marjorie laughed so hard she had to sit down in the slush. Then a shape came pouring out of the hedge, silver and low and about the size of a Labrador, and went straight over the top of the flock like it had somewhere to be. The dog stopped mid-bark. Dai's mouth fell open. Marjorie wiped her eyes with a glove that was no use for it and said, "Well, she always did like a fuss." The hare that ran alongside the gate, pale as a ghost, was not a ghost, and neither of them ever mentioned it again.
