Warrior script on a forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A forearm rests across a open book, with the word warrior written in slim, flowing black script across the inner arm towards the wrist. The linework is delicate and even, with no shading, and the ink appears as a single dark tone. The warm, softly lit composition places the tattoo in the lower centre of the frame, with a teal knitted blanket and a page of printed text filling the surrounding space.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Mrs Pell kept the proof sheets in a biscuit tin under the bench at the print shop in Ludlow, and nobody else was allowed to turn them. The spring the council pulled the contract, she sat up nights with a dictionary of village speech that no one would buy, pencilling a tick beside each word before it went to the press. Warrior sat on page eighty-one, between wary and wash.

The foreman thought it was daft. "Nobody needs that word in a book about hedges and dialect," he said, and she told him the word had been in Ludlow longer than the press, carried by women who came home from the bobbin mills with their knuckles split from lye and their backs straight anyway. She set the entry herself in a plain slanting hand, copied from her mother's letters, because the house typeface looked too stiff to hold it.

The book came off the press in March. Teddy Auld, the lad who did the binding, stitched the signatures on her kitchen table while the wind pushed under the back door and lifted the corner of the blanket over her knees. When the last copy was done she took one from the stack, opened it at eighty-one, and laid it face up on the windowsill where the afternoon sun could reach the ink. Then she went back to the bench to start on the next list.
