Black script tattoo reading que sera sera on the inner forearm, with the hands clasped over bare knees outdoors.

Que sera sera script on a forearm

Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A close photograph of a forearm with the words que sera sera written in a black cursive script running diagonally across the arm. The linework is smooth and the lettering looks solid black, with the ink appearing slightly softened by the warm, filtered light. The person sits outdoors with the hands clasped together over the knees, against a blue sky, a stone wall and a dark green sleeve.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

By the time the causeway shows its stones again, the goats have already decided. You stand at the sea wall with the ledger under one arm and the old clockwork tide-glass in the other, counting minutes the way your grandmother taught you, by the sound of gulls changing their minds. Nobody in Saltcote has read the crossing rules for eighty years. They trust the water and the sky, and mostly the water is right.

The letter came in the satchel on Tuesday, its paper gone the colour of weak tea. It was addressed to the Harbour Office in a hand that looped its capitals like sails. Inside was a single line in ink, slanting across the page as if written in a hurry or a gale: que sera sera. Nothing else. No signature, no postmark you could read, only a smudged thumbprint that might have been salt.

Your mother used to say it whenever the supply boats were late. You thought it was a prayer, then a joke, and for a while a kind of threat. Now you fold the paper into your coat and walk out along the stones, one hand on the rusted rail of the old pier, because the tide has turned early and someone has to lead the goats home.

At the far end, where the causeway meets the grey shoulder of the dunes, a lantern is burning in full daylight. Beside it stands a small woman with a satchel of her own, and when she turns, the looping capitals on the lid match the ones on your letter exactly. The water rises around your boots. You laugh, hand her the ledger, and go on.
