A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Maro the potter had no paint except what the river gave her. She ground ochre with rain and crushed cherry blossom in a bowl until the pink ran out of it, then she washed her colours onto the clay so they bled into one another like weather on a wall. The men of Keth said a pot with a fox on it was worth nothing, and they said it loudly, because the fox was running and the paint had never stayed where it was put.

In the dry year the wells failed, and the magistrate came up from the coast with a bronze chest, locked and sealed. Inside, he said, was the last of the rain the old kings had stored, and whoever opened it would have the grain. Nobody could find the key. Maro sat on the step and looked at the lock plate, where someone long ago had scratched a key shape into the metal. She dipped her brush in the blossom water and painted over the scratch, and the lines spread and softened the way her fox had. The lock gave a sound like a bird clearing its throat.

Inside the chest there was no rain, only a flutter. A wolf with a moon under one paw climbed out and shook itself. An owl, yellow-eyed, dropped off the lid. Two parrots, one green and one blue and orange, went up through the hole in the roof. Two hummingbirds came out arguing over a single drop, and a leopard stretched in the straw. Last of all came a dog, which looked at the magistrate, then at Maro, and sat down on her foot.

The magistrate shouted for his grain, but the animals had gone into the hills, taking their colours with them, and the chest held only a dry key. That night the sky over Keth went the colour of a wet wash, and rain fell on the fields until the ditches ran. Maro kept the fox, which had never left her bench, and she painted nothing else that year.
