Colourful cat head with crystals on thigh

Neo-trad · Thigh · Colour · Photo

A stylised cat head with blue eyes sits at the centre, shaded in orange, red and pink and framed by teal and blue crystal shapes. Bold black outlines define the ears, eyes and features, with soft gradient shading across the face and beaded chains hanging below. The tattoo sits on a thigh against pale skin, and a faded tattoo is partly visible at the left edge of the frame.

The cat came aboard at Mombasa in a crate lined with someone's old wedding sheet, and she spent the first fortnight out of the Indian Ocean refusing to be looked at. I was ship's cook on the Marigold Rose, nineteen years old and certain I would be a steward by Christmas. The only one who would go near her was the carpenter's boy, who fed her dried fish he had pinched from my galley.

Off the Cape the cargo shifted. Forty crates of rough crystal, blue-green stone the agent swore came from the Ural hills, broke loose in a squall, and the hold filled with a glassy clatter. Mr Halloran cursed the crew for an hour. The cat, who had been sleeping on the sacks of glass beads bound for the Zanzibar market, sat up and considered the broken geodes as if they had personally offended her. Then she walked straight through the spilt shards without a mark on her pads.

Nobody believed the bosun when he said she had led him to the leak. The water that had been seeping through the forward timbers for a week ran from a split plank exactly where she liked to sit. When we prised it open, we found a string of beads knotted beneath the boards by someone who had sailed this route long before us, and the cord had rotted through in a dozen places.

We brought her home with the beads looped round her neck like a chandelier. When the Marigold docked at Bristol, the customs man counted the crystals twice and still came up short. The cat had already gone over the rail onto the quay, and I never saw her again, though I still catch myself checking the bilge.
