Watercolour feather on the forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Mixed · Photo

A close photograph of a forearm near the wrist, showing a delicate black line drawing of a feather or sweeping stroke. Soft pink and turquoise watercolour-style washes sit behind and around the linework, with the blurred background adding to the soft look. The black lines are thin and fluid, and the composition places the design centrally across the arm.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Ada came down to the dye-house at dusk with the river still cold on her hands and found old Tobias Crane scraping pink crust from the rinse vats with a wooden paddle. "A heron's feather fell in the blue this morning," he said, without looking up. "Came out streaked like a wet stone. I thought you'd want to see it before the wind did."

It lay on the drying board, grey at the base and bruised with turquoise where the dye had crept along the vane. Tobias said the heron was the one that crossed the valley every spring to the school at the top of the hill, and that it had been carrying letters for the schoolmaster since before he had a beard. The reunion was set for the Michaelmas fair, when the children who had gone away would come back with their hair gone thin and ask after the swing that hung from the chestnut.

Ada dipped the quill end in the pink and drew one long stroke through the air above the board. The feather lifted without being asked, turned once over the vats, and went out through the open door on a wind that smelled of wet hay. She followed as far as the lane, then stopped, because a feather in flight is not a thing a dyer can chase.

In the morning the schoolmaster's daughter found it caught on the sill of the empty classroom, the colours run into a soft wash across the wood. Beside it, in the dust, something had made a single black stroke that ended in a curl, as if the bird had paused there to sign for the letters it had brought, and the ink was still wet.
