Blue feather tattoo on a forearm
Realism · Forearm · Mixed · Photo
A single feather runs diagonally across the skin, with a pale quill and barbs shaded in blue, black and grey. The black bars and soft grey edges give the feather a realistic, three-dimensional look against a warm, dimly lit background. The composition is centred on the tattoo, with the arm filling the lower part of the frame.

The snow had shut the Coldharbour road by four, and by six my father had stopped pretending the stew would stretch and started on the brandy instead. Nobody travelled the high moor in weather like that. So when the knocking came at the back door, Mother sent me for the lamp and told me not to lift the bar until I had seen a face through the gap.

It was a boy, no older than I was, with frost stiff in his eyebrows and a canvas satchel pressed flat against his ribs. He gave his name as Tobiah Crane and said he had walked from the mill at Ashby with a letter for the magistrate. Father reached for the satchel to bring him in out of the cold, and the boy flinched back, then slowly drew out a single feather and held it up to the lamp. It was long and blue as a kingfisher's back, barred with black, its quill as pale as candle wax.
'Jay,' Mother said quietly, and the word seemed to settle the whole room. Tobiah said his sister Nell had been taking birds from the snares on the moor, cutting the wings for feathers to sell to a milliner in town, and that the man who paid for them had come asking questions at the mill. The letter in the satchel named him. Tobiah had only wanted somewhere warm to hide it until morning, and he had been too cold to think of anywhere else.
We kept him by the fire that night and bolted the back door twice. In the morning the road was still white, but Father had already gone out with the letter sealed inside his coat. Before he left, he propped Tobiah's feather in the window, where the first thin light came through its barbs and laid stripes of blue across the flagstones. He told me to leave it there so anyone walking up from the valley would know which house had kept its word.
