Watercolour globe on a shoulder

Fine line · Shoulder · Mixed · Photo

A small globe is tattooed on the upper chest near the shoulder, drawn with a fine dark outline and a latitude and longitude grid. The landmasses and oceans are shaded in soft blues, greens and greys that blend like watercolour washes. The globe sits centrally in the frame against plain pale skin and a light grey wall.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The schoolmaster's globe has been losing its varnish since before the war, and you are the one sent to dust it on Mondays, because you are the only child on Hallan who does not mind standing on the chair. Today the red lines are wrong again. Someone has drawn a thin thread through the Atlantic, skipping over the blue where the sea is supposed to be. When you ask Mr Coyle who did it, he says the lines were never meant to stay still, and to mind your rag.

Hallan is a smudge the size of a thumbprint on that globe. You find it by the wash of blue that bleeds past the edge of the paper, where the painter ran out of patience or money. Your grandmother says he was a Dutchman who came over with the herring boats and left his brushes in the boathouse, and that he used the cheap blue for the sky because the good one cost a week's catch. You rub the varnish and count the lines of latitude like rungs, and the longitude lines pinch together at the top until there is nothing left to measure.

In March the ferry does not come and the bread runs out. You sit with the globe on your knees and trace the way out with one finger. Three lines north and you would be in weather. Two east, a town with a name you cannot say. Your finger keeps stopping on a grey-green patch the painter blurred so badly it might be land or only shadow. You decide it is land.

When the boat finally comes, you wrap the globe in your jumper and leave it on the quay bench with a note for Mr Coyle in your best hand. Dust it on Mondays, it says. The lines are only a suggestion. Then you climb aboard and watch the island shrink to a blue stain on the water, and in your coat pocket, a pencil you have not yet decided how to use.
