Dotwork globe on a shoulder
Dotwork · Shoulder · Black and grey · Photo
A small, round globe showing continents in dark stippled dots, with the land areas left as lighter skin and the ocean shaded in dense dots. The linework is made entirely of dots, giving soft gradients on one side of the sphere. The tattoo sits near the shoulder blade and is shown in a close, slightly angled photograph against pale skin, with a dark bra strap visible at the lower edge.

The globe lives on the potting shed windowsill, its brass stand snapped off years ago, so it leans against a jar of twine. Your uncle Teodor says the ocean is the dark part because the sea has to hold everything the land lets go of. You are nine and don't believe him, but you press your thumb over the Pacific anyway and feel only cold glaze.

Every spring he sits you at the bench with a fine nib and a saucer of ink and tells you to make the sea with dots. Not lines, he says, lines lie about water. You prick the paper until your wrist aches, and the ocean darkens from pale to dense, a slow weather rolling in from one edge. The land you leave alone, a blank the colour of the paper, so the continents rise out of the page like things coming up for air.
The summer the greenhouse glass cracks, Teodor stops talking about oceans. He sits between the bean rows with his boots in the dirt and forgets his tea until it's cold. You bring him the globe one evening and he turns it slowly, stopping on a patch of stippling that has faded to grey.
In September you carry the globe out to the wall where the runner beans have finally gone over. You dig a thumb into the wet soil and press it onto the sphere, right where the ink runs thickest, and a little earth stays caught in the dots like a country that has decided to stay put.
