Black and grey dotwork tattoo of a globe showing continents, sitting on the inner upper arm of a person wearing a white sleeve.

Dotwork globe on the upper arm

Dotwork · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

A circular globe is tattooed on the inner upper arm, with its outline formed by fine dots. The landmasses are left as bare skin, with the surrounding ocean built up from dense stippled dots that give a soft shaded effect. The image is black and grey against a dark background, and the globe sits near the centre of the frame.

The globe came up from the cellar of Harrowgate Keep in a crate of wet straw, and the first thing I noticed was that the sea had gone to rot. Someone three centuries back had wanted the oceans dark, and damp had finished the job, so the water was a grey crust spreading out from every coastline like mould on bread. Only the land was clean, pale plaster the colour of old teeth.

Sister Agnes had been the castle's last cartographer, and her ledger said she never let anyone touch the globe but herself. Every night she went down with a nib and a pot of ink and stippled the water back into shadow, one dot at a time, so the continents stood out like islands of bone in a black sky. The ledger never explains why she left the land untouched. I spent a week on the question, sleeping on a pallet under the roofless hall while rain dripped through the stones onto my notes.

On the eighth night I found her note tucked inside the meridian ring. It was one line, in a hand that shook: Keep the middle clear. Keep it for whoever comes back to find it. I laid my palm over the pale bulk of the great southern continent and felt the plaster, cool as everything else in that cellar, yet I could have sworn it was warmer than the rest.

I took up the nib at dawn. I did not start with the sea. I began at the edge of the world, where the outline ran, and set a ring of small black points around the circle so the globe could be read whole from across the courtyard. Then I went back to the water, dot by dot, and let the ink settle into the places the rain had worn away, leaving the land exactly as she had left it.
