Watercolour hibiscus on the ribs
Botanical · Ribs · Colour · Photo
A large hibiscus-style flower sits at the centre of the design, with smaller blooms, leaves and loose strokes of orange, red, teal and blue. Black ink splatters and thin dark lines run across the piece and fade into the skin at its edges. The tattoo fills the frame along the side of the torso, with a hand holding a strap at the upper left.

Hester had painted the hibiscus eleven times before the glasshouse foreman stopped pretending not to watch her. Each morning she carried her tin of pans down the gravel path at Ashcombe, past the cold frames and the leaking water butt, and each morning the paper drank the colour too fast. The red bled into the orange. The teal wandered off the petal and drowned in the wet.

"You're fighting it," said Dorcas, who had kept the orchid house since before the war and spoke as though every plant had personally disappointed her. "Let the water do the work. Stop holding the brush like a knife."
Hester tried it on the twelfth morning. She loaded the brush, touched the paper, and let her wrist go slack. A bloom opened where she had not planned one. Then a second, a leaf in green gone too blue, and finally a spatter of black ink where she had flicked the brush to shake loose a drop of water. It landed across the petals like a bird's shadow.
She meant to scrape it off. Instead she left it, and when Dorcas came back at dusk and held the sheet up to the lamp, the old woman was quiet for a long time.
"There," she said at last. "That's the hibiscus. The rest was just you being polite to it."}
