Watercolour jellyfish on a thigh

Thigh · Colour · Photo

A jellyfish with a purple and pink bell trails pink, magenta and pale blue tentacles downwards across the upper thigh. Soft washes, splattered droplets and fine black lines for some tentacles give a watercolour effect. The colour is bold and dominates the composition, with the design set against a plain grey background.

You are the only one awake on Pell Street when the back door of the bakery sticks, and you shoulder it open with a tray of rye on your hip. The ovens have been lit since three. Outside, the harbour is the colour of wet slate, and the first thing you notice is that the gulls have gone quiet, which they never do before six.

Your nephew Tomasz comes in from the yard, boots dripping. "There's something in the shallows at the slipway," he says. "Pink. Like someone tipped paint in the water." You wipe your hands on your apron and follow him down with the bread still warm under a cloth. The tide has pulled back and left a skin of foam, and in it hang a dozen bells, violet at the crown and rose at the hem, trailing threads of blue that lift and fall with the swell.

You crouch on the cold stone. One bell drifts against your boot, so thin you can see the lamp of the bakery window wobbling through it. Tomasz asks if they sting. You don't know. You tell him to fetch the long net from the shed, and while he runs you break off a heel of rye and scatter the crumbs on the water, the way your mother used to for the herring boats. The bells turn slowly toward them, as if they had only been waiting for someone to notice.

By the time the sun lifts over the breakwater, the net is full of light and the ovens are cooling. You bake the morning loaves anyway. Nobody buys the pink-streaked rolls that day, so you keep them in the window, and when customers ask what the glow is, you tell them only that the sea was generous before breakfast.
