Jellyfish tattoo on an ankle

Fine line · Ankle · Mixed · Photo

A jellyfish with a domed bell and long, trailing tentacles is drawn across the ankle and lower leg. The bell is outlined in fine black linework with shaded vertical lines and small purple dots, while the frilled lower tentacles are scalloped and partly filled with hatching. The thin blue tentacles sweep diagonally down the leg against a blurred wooden floor.

Dear Agnes,

The tide went out further than I have ever seen it this week, and it left a jellyfish on the causeway below the chapel steps. Brother Anselm found it at Lauds, a bell of pale glass the size of a serving dish, its trailing threads laid across the wet stones like the strings of a harp someone had dropped. He wanted to carry it back to the water in his cupped hands, and I told him the sea would come for it by noon, which was foolish of me, because the sea was already coming for it by the time I finished saying so.

We went down with a bucket and the old herring net. The bell was lined with fine ridges, the way Mother's good pleats ran down her grey skirts, and small rows of violet beads sat along its brim as if someone had pressed in pins. The lower threads were frilled at their ends, scalloped and crosshatched, and where they caught the light they took on a blue I cannot name. Anselm counted them aloud. Thirty-one, he said, and then lost his place when one lifted and drifted over his sleeve.

We got it into the shallows just as the water turned. It did not swim away so much as let itself be taken, unfurling down into the channel the way a letter opens when you have read it many times. Anselm said the Office for the Dead that evening, though nobody had died. I think he wanted something said over it, and I let him have it.

Your brother in the cloister, Thomas
