Colour tattoo of an elephant with its trunk raised, surrounded by paint-like splashes and drips, on the upper back near the shoulder blade.

Watercolour-style elephant on upper back

Back · Colour · Photo

A raised-trunk elephant sits on the upper back, with a splash of paint-like shapes to its upper left and runs of colour dripping down from its body. The linework is soft and the shading is wash-like, with pink, purple, teal, yellow and orange blended into the outlines. The tattoo fills the centre of the frame against plain skin, with a blurred indoor background at the edges.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The paint tins had been left out in the rain again, and Ruth found the lids swollen and the colours bled into one another across the yard. Her grandfather's wooden elephant stood in the middle of the mess with its trunk raised, as though it had heard the shop bell and wanted to announce itself. It had been painted so many times that nobody in Ferris Street remembered its first colour.

Ruth had meant to scrape it back that afternoon. Instead she dipped a brush in the spilt violet and daubed a cloud where the sun should have been above the trunk. The yellow and green she flicked off the end of the brush went wide, spattering the fence and the washing line. Mr Halloran from the chandlery stopped at the gate with a parcel under his arm and laughed at her until he had to sit on the step.

"It wants a better sun," he said, wiping his eyes. "Something that drips." So she let the wet paint run down the elephant's flanks, pink bleeding into teal, orange pooling round its feet, until the wood seemed to be melting into a rainbow. By dusk the yard smelt of turpentine, and the thing looked finished in a way it never had before.

Her grandfather had always said a sign should tell you what the shop was for. Ruth lettered a single line beneath the beast in careful gold: Mend what the weather spoils. She hung it above the door and went inside to wash her hands, and the elephant kept its trunk lifted, waiting for the next customer.
