The tulips came up on the Thursday train, forty of them wrapped in damp newspaper, and Mr Pryce had them stood in jam jars along the bar of the Palais before anyone had swept the floor. Nobody asked for flowers at a Saturday dance. We wanted the boards waxed and the trumpet tuned, and we got neither on time.

I was on the cloakroom that winter, which meant I saw every coat come in and every excuse go out. Walter Lusk came each week in the same grey overcoat and never once took it off on the floor. He stood by the jam jars and watched the lamplight catch the petals, which were the colour of boiled sweets gone pale at the edges.

The trouble started over a spilled glass of cordial, though I have never believed that. Someone's elbow swung wide, the punch went over the tablecloth in a long pink tongue, and a purple scarf dropped into it like a bruise. The jars rocked. Walter caught the nearest one before it toppled, and the water ran down his cuff and onto the boards.

He didn't dance with me that night. He walked me to the tram with a tulip stem pinched in his fingers, dripping on his good shoes, and at the stop he pressed it into my hand and said the colour would fade by Easter. It did. I still keep the stem in a drawer, bent where his thumb had been.
