Your uncle used to say a fair was a route drawn in dots: a town here, a field there, the next gate always further than it looked on the map. You kept his map folded inside your coat, the journey pricked out in pencil, and each time the caravan turned, you made a small mark where the line bent.

The rose came from the shooting gallery. Marta, who ran the rifle stall, had kept one painted rose at the back of her shelf for nine seasons and never let anyone win it. On the last night in Harrowby you spent your final coin on five shots. Four went wide. The fifth struck the tin backboard, and the rose tipped forward into your hand, a petal bruised, two green leaves still clinging to its wire.

Marta laughed and said that rose had been waiting for someone willing to walk the long way round. You didn't understand her until the morning the lorries pulled out, when you unfolded the map on the step of the wagon and saw what the pencil had been doing all along. The dotted line ran north, bent twice, and stopped at a point just beyond the next hedge, where the road to Ashcombe began.
