Red flower with teal stem on forearm

Botanical · Forearm · Colour · Photo

A red flower with soft, painterly edges sits near the top of the forearm, with its petals shaded in layers of red and pink. A teal wash runs down from the bloom into a long, thin black stem that tapers towards the wrist, with small specks of ink along its length. The colour is bold against the pale skin, and the composition is diagonal, drawing the eye from the flower down the arm.

"Leave it," she said, when he reached for the mop. He looked at her as if she had told him to leave a fire burning. She wiped her hands on her apron and crouched. Where the red had run towards the drain it met a grey-blue dribble from the glaze bucket and thinned into teal, a long thread of colour pulling away from the spill, speckled where stray drops had hit the tiles.

Her mother had kept a bakery in Ramsgate and had never once let a spill go unscrubbed. Dilys had always assumed that was about hygiene. Now the stain sat on the grey floor as if someone had painted it on purpose, and the first light was creeping grey through the shutters, and the oven timers had not yet started their small shrill arguments.

She fetched the thin brush she used for egg wash, dipped it in the puddle and drew one line from the red down to the drain, pressing harder at the top and lifting off at the end. "Right," she said. "Now we've got a flower. Tomasz, fetch the loaves before they cool."
