Wave and pine trees in triangles on lower legs
Geometric · Calf · Black and grey · Photo
Two side by side photographs show matching triangle tattoos on the lower leg. The left design holds a stylised curling wave with hatched water lines, and the right design shows a group of pine trees, three small birds and wavy water lines within a bold outline. The linework is clean and mostly uniform, with light shading on the wave, and the tattoos are rendered in black ink and grey tones on pale skin against a plain background.

Up on the eleventh floor of Carrow House the lift was broken more often than not, so the Dunne boys took the stairs and told each other stories on the landings. Their gran had come over the water, and she said the sea was a grey floor that lifted itself up when it was angry and came down on the coast like a door slamming. Tomas, the younger, believed her. Errol, the elder, believed only in the bus timetable.

One winter the gas went off and the flats turned cold, and their mother sent them to the window with a box of matches to watch the car park for the man who owed her money. Beyond the bins and the ring road, a line of dark trees stood on the hill above the reservoir. Tomas said that was where the trees would take them if they walked far enough. Errol said there was nothing up there but sheep and wet. They argued until the light went orange over the estate.
On the first warm morning they went, with bread, a tin of pears and the old compass from the kitchen drawer. They followed the reservoir path until the tower blocks shrank to matchboxes and the hill became a green rise with pines standing along its crest like people waiting for a bus. Three birds went over, and Errol had to admit they were not sheep. At the top Tomas turned and saw the sea far off, a bright hard line, and understood his gran had been right about the lifting floor.
They came back at dusk, slower, and the lift was working for once. Their mother stood on the landing with her arms folded. Errol opened his mouth to lie and found he had nothing to lie about. Tomas held out the pear tin, still heavy, and said the trees were real. Their mother looked at the tin for a long time, then took it, and the three of them stood in the stairwell while the cold light came down from the high windows.
