Seascape with palm trees in a diamond on a forearm

Dotwork · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A diamond-shaped panel on the forearm frames a seascape. Palm trees grow on a dark rocky outcrop, with a distant shoreline, rolling waves and a small seated figure on a board in the foreground. The shading is built from fine stippled dots and soft gradients, with a crisp single-line border around the diamond.

The rain had got under the awning by eleven, so I stopped pretending the second-hand frames would sell and started wrapping them in newspaper instead. Mrs Penhallow from the fish stall kept calling across the gap that nobody buys art in the wet, which was true, and which was why the small black-and-white print at the back of the box was still there when the man in the yellow cagoule stopped.

He didn't look at the frames. He looked at the print, a dotted picture of a dark rock standing out of flat water, three palms bent over its top like people leaning in to hear a secret. Down in the corner a surfer sat on his board, waiting for a set that never seemed to come.

"My father used to paddle out to that," he said. "Says the island's only there at low tide. The rest of the time you have to take it on trust."

I asked whether he wanted it wrapped. He said he'd like it framed properly, and that he'd wait. So we stood under the drip while I measured the print against a diamond of card I'd cut for it, the corners sharp, the ruled lines gone over twice. Mrs Penhallow gave up her grumbling and came over to watch.

When the rain eased he paid in coins, folded the print flat inside his coat and walked off towards the slipway. I watched until the yellow was lost among the umbrellas. Then I turned the card over and wrote a price on the back, though I had already decided it was not for sale.
