Mountain and constellation in a diamond frame
Dotwork · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A diamond-shaped panel shows a starry night sky with a constellation joined by fine lines, above a range of mountains and a row of pine tree silhouettes reflected over water. The sky is built from dense stippled dots, while the mountains and trees use shaded lines and soft grey tones. The image is almost entirely black and grey, with a faint pinkish wash near the mountain edge, and a black bird tattoo sits below the panel.

The surveyors came up the valley in the thaw, and the old woman at the lake house would not let them measure the water. She said the lake was counting, and a count that was interrupted had to begin again from one, which was how the last three hundred years had been lost. Her grandson Teodor laughed at her and fetched the brass theodolite from the boathouse anyway, because the company paid for every reading and he had a debt to a man in Sorrow Pass.

He set the instrument on the shingle at dawn and sighted the peak across the water, the one with the notch like a broken tooth. The needle sat still. Then the stars went out in the order they always did, from the east, and the pines on the far shore leaned toward him one by one, as if they had heard their names called. He wrote the figures in his book. When he checked them against the stars that night, the constellation over the peak had moved three fingers' width to the left, and the seven bright points had rearranged themselves into a bird with its wings folded.
He walked back to the house without speaking. His grandmother was on the step with a cup of wet ash tea, and she did not look up. Tell me the number you got, she said. He told her. She nodded slowly and said that was the first honest reading anyone had taken in her lifetime, and that now the lake would have to decide what it owed him. Teodor looked at the water, which had gone perfectly flat and black, holding a clean reflection of every tree and every star, and for the first time he understood that the mountain was the one doing the surveying.
