Mountain and pine forest in a geometric frame on a forearm

Dotwork · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A photograph of a tattoo on the inner forearm showing a diamond-shaped panel with a dotwork mountain range, a row of pine trees along the lower edge, and a separate small triangle above. The stippled dots build soft shading on the peaks and fade toward the top of the triangle, while the lower section is solid black. The image is in greyscale, shot close up against a dark background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The snow came off the high ground on the third of January, the same week my father stopped walking up to the top field. From the yard you could see the range through the gap between the barn and the silage clamp, a grey line stippled with frost, and the pines along its foot looked as though someone had pressed a fine nib into the paper and lifted it again.

Uncle Tomasz kept a weather ledger in the back of the milk book, and he had written the same line for forty years: the mountain moves when nobody is watching. I laughed at him. Then in February I counted the fence posts along the ridge and got eleven where there had been twelve, and the small triangle of rock above the far field was, I would swear to it, a hand's width further east than it had been at Christmas.

I took the dog up with a pair of dividers and a flask of tea. The ground was hard enough to ring under my boots. At the edge of the wood the pines stood in a row like people waiting for a bus that had been cancelled, and I measured from the lowest branch to the first snowline and wrote the figures in pencil on my cuff, because the notebook was in my coat and my hands had stopped working properly.

When I came down the light had gone blue and the mountain had settled back where it belonged. I sat at the kitchen table beside Tomasz's ledger and under his last entry I wrote, in the same grey pencil: moved, not far. I have not yet decided whether that is the frightening part or the comforting one.
