Mags Penhallow kept the count for the harbour, and every spring the boys came down to the wall to ask how many waves there were in the ocean. She gave them the same answer each time. There is a million, and nobody has reached the end of them, so you may as well stop counting and sit down.

One March a boy called Tobias Wren came down with a slate and a stick of chalk and would not sit. His mother kept the bakery, and the herring boats had gone out late, and the loaves had gone hard on the racks. He wanted to know which wave was the one that mattered. Mags told him the sea holds no wave above another. Each one climbs the shingle, falls over itself and runs back, and the quiet ones are forgotten the same as the loud ones. Tobias said that was a waste. She said it was the sea's business, not hers.

He stayed on the wall anyway, scowling at the water. When a big swell broke on the rocks below and threw spray over both of them, he laughed before he could stop himself. Mags laughed too. She said that was the one that did it, and the sea had only made the one for him. Tobias wrote on his slate: a million waves, crash at once to make you smile. Mags read it and told him to rub out the middle, because a wave does not hurry, and the people who matter most are the ones who wait for it.

He kept the slate. Years later it hung in the bakery window, and the bread was always sold out by noon.
