Nobody on the quay believed Jack Tullis when he came in grey-faced with his hands shaking. Whales don't lift their tails for boats, they said, not off Porthgwarra. But I was on the slip that evening with the lantern, and I saw the fluke rise through the swell like a pair of black wings folding. The water went slow and deliberate around it, braiding itself into ropes as if the sea meant to tie the beast off to the rocks.

Jack swore it dived seven times before the boat rocked free. Every time the tail went under, the sea was patterned like the cable we used to splice on the winch drum, and the spray hung in a grey hush the way frost hangs on a gate. He never went out that way again, but he kept his lantern and wouldn't let anyone touch the wick.

Last spring I took it down from its hook and the wick was still sound. I lit it for the first time in thirty years, set it on the wall, and watched the water until the fifth tail rose, and the sixth, and then the seventh, black and quiet against the light. I told the gulls that Jack had been right all along, and that they might keep their distance.
