Fluffy cat and outlined hand on upper arm
Fine line · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A small tattoo shows a fluffy cat with its head turned downward, its shaded fur rendered in fine, soft strokes. Beneath it, a delicate outlined hand reaches toward the cat, with only the contours drawn and no shading. The piece is entirely black and grey on pale skin, with a plain background and a dark sleeve at the edge of the frame.

The frost had been on the water trough since dawn, and Nan Gilchrist had stood at the byre door for the better part of an hour, rattling a tin of pilchards at nothing. Behind her the ewes shifted and coughed. Somewhere up in the hayloft the grey cat was keeping its own counsel.

"She's not coming down for you," said Tom from the gate, stamping his boots. "She's not come down for anyone since the lambing." Nan didn't answer. She had known the cat since it was a scrap of smoke-coloured fluff left in a feed sack, and she knew its sulks the way she knew the weather in her knees. The cat had taken the bad winter personally. It had turned its back on the kitchen, on the Aga, on the warm lap of anyone who sat still long enough.
So Nan did the only thing forty years of stubbornness had taught her. She set the tin on the bottom rung of the ladder, pulled off her glove and held her bare hand out, flat and open, the way you'd offer a sugar lump to a horse. Then she stopped talking. The cold got into her fingers at once. Tom started to say something, and she lifted one finger for silence.
It was nearly dark when the cat came down the ladder one rung at a time, head low and ears flat, like a thing that had made the decision on its own. It walked past the tin. It sniffed the air above her knuckles, then pressed its cheek briefly into her cold hand. "There," Nan said quietly, and went to fetch the lantern.
