The message reached Halden Station at the wrong hour, when the hydroponic lamps had dimmed to their night amber and you were the only one awake to read it. It was not words. Your grandmother called those trails ferry lines. Ships on the old route used to shed seed capsules at the edge of the Pell belt, she said, so that whatever world they were bound for would have something to grow if the crew never arrived. Nobody had flown that route in eighty years. You queried the archive anyway, and the archive, which had been patient with you since you were small, returned a manifest: forty thousand dormant capsules, released and never logged since the year the last ferry turned for home.

You spent the rest of the cycle in the cold store, opening crates with a bent spanner, looking for something that would explain the dots. In the bottom drawer of her old workbench you found a card in her looping handwriting: Don't catch them. Let them drift. Somebody always reaches back.

You sent the hand picture out on the open band with your own reply beneath it, a single line of code that meant only, we see you. Then you went to the observation port. Far off, a faint haze was moving against the stars, slow and deliberate. When it reached the lamplight, one grey speck lifted from the glass, turned once, and settled on the back of your hand, where it stayed.
