Largemouth bass through waves on a forearm

Traditional · Forearm · Colour · Photo

A largemouth bass leaps upward, with its open mouth, dorsal and tail fins outlined in heavy black. Speckled dots and soft shading across the body give it texture, while stylised white-tipped waves surround the fish. Green, orange and red ink fill the body and water, set against pale fabric in the background.

Dear Tom,

The quarry has flooded properly now, right up over the old tramway, and Dad says the water is deeper than the church tower is high, which I don't believe but I've stopped arguing. You'll remember the bass that Dad hooked off the weir the summer before you went. He swore it was the size of a Sunday joint. Nobody believed him, and then in March it came up under the lock gate and I saw it myself, green as bottle glass with that orange flush down its belly and a mouth you could post a letter into.

We tried for it all of April. Dad used the spinner you left behind, the one with the chipped red blade, and I used worms because I'm not proud. On the last Saturday of the month the wind got up off the reservoir and the whole surface went to white horses. I was on the lower steps with my boots in the spray when the fish came straight up out of a wave, shaking its head like a dog that had been told off, and for a moment it hung there against the grey sky with every fin spread out. Then it dropped back and the water closed over it as if nothing had happened.

Dad didn't say a word. He just reeled in, coiled the line over his elbow, and handed me the rod. I've kept it on the nail by the door since, with the chipped blade still on. Come home at Easter if you can. The fish is still there, I'm sure of it, and I'd like to show you where it jumps.

Love, Nell
