Where is my mind lettering on the back of the head
Lettering · Other · Black and grey · Photo
A photograph taken from behind shows the phrase where is my mind? in bold black lowercase sans-serif letters across a shaved area at the back of the head. The letters are crisp and evenly spaced, with solid ink and little shading, and the skin around them shows soft natural tones. The composition is centred on the tattoo, with dark hair gathered in buns and a dark plug visible in one ear.

Right, sit yourselves down, because the fellow I'm telling you about was still crawling the floorboards of the Palais when the band packed up for the night. Harold Pendle had come in at eight with his good shoes polished and his wits, as far as anybody knew, sitting on his shoulders like a hat. By half ten he was on his knees beside the cloakroom hatch, patting the boards with his palm.

"Where is my mind?" he asked the cloakroom girl, who was counting shillings into a tin and didn't look up. "I had it when the foxtrot started. I remember the foxtrot."
She jerked her chin at the ballroom, where a lady in a green frock was being steered round the floor by a trombone case. "Ask her. She's had her eye on you since the interval."
Harold went after them across the sprung boards, past the potted palms and the lad selling Vimto from a trestle. The trombonist, who was in fact a retired policeman called Sid, nodded at the case, and Harold lifted the catch. Inside, folded neatly on the velvet, lay a sensible grey mind with a pencil behind one ear and a ticket stub for the 9.15 bus. He tucked it under his arm, thanked Sid, and turned back towards the lights.
The band struck up a quickstep. Harold put his hat on, took the green frock by the waist, and for the first time since 1938 he found he could not have told you where his feet were going, and did not care in the least.
