Ruth came up the lane that Saturday with a basket of eggs and a grievance. Her brother Tom had lost a ewe somewhere past the gate and was certain the noise had sent it scrambling over the quarry edge. She asked the gate who was making all the racket. Behind the hedge, a dozen voices rose and fell in the way of people who had practised badly for a month, and they were not singing to anyone in particular. They were singing up, into the thin white noon, the way the old hymn book said the first shepherds had done before there were churches to sing in.

Ruth stood a long while with the eggs going warm against her hip. Then she set the basket on the stone wall, lifted the latch, and went in to find out what the ewe had been doing all this time, and whether anything overhead had bothered to answer.
