Black cat face with crescent moon on thigh

Traditional · Thigh · Mixed · Photo

A black cat face fills the frame, with a gold crescent moon on its forehead and a heart-shaped nose above a light grey and pink muzzle. Bold dark outlines define the fur, eyes and whiskers, with grey shading across the eyes and head. Gold and yellow accents appear on the moon and near the eyes against a mostly black and grey palette, and the design is centred on the thigh.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

You learn the cat before you learn the knots. Vesper sits on the flour bin in the galley of the Marigold as if she paid for the ship, black as a cooking pot, with a crescent moon on her brow that the cook swears a drunk sailor painted in Valparaíso. Nobody agrees about the heart on her nose. You stop asking after the second week, when she starts walking the rail before the weather turns.

Cook Hannah Tregear does not believe in omens, but she believes in the cat's grumbling more than the glass. When the barometer drops and the tins begin to knock against their hooks, Vesper rises, stretches, and slips out through the scuttle. Tregear sends you after her with a lantern. You find her on the wet hatch cover, eyes throwing the light back in two gold-rimmed coins, staring at a black sky where no moon shows.

The squall hits at four bells. Water comes green over the rail and the mess table skids into the bulkhead, and you spend the worst of it wedged beside the stove, holding a pan of cold porridge so it does not fly. Vesper is back inside by then, pressed against your shins and purring like a loose hinge. By morning the sea is flat and grey, and the only casualties are one cracked plate and a mackerel gone off.

Tregear sets a saucer of fish skin on the floor and says the cat has never once been wrong about the weather, only about the crew. Then she lifts the bin lid, and Vesper drops in among the flour, leaving two white paw prints on the rim and a faint moon of dust on the boards.
