Whimsical line-art sleeve shown across four arms

Fine line · Upper arm · Mixed · Photo

The collage shows four panels of arms carrying a continuous sleeve of illustrated tattoos. Motifs include a red and black ladybird on the upper arm, a dandelion seed head, a flower, a snail with a spiral shell, and a cat-like figure, linked by thin looping lines. The fine black linework is combined with stippled dotwork shading and small red areas of colour against bare skin.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Dev had asked me three times whether the snail on the ceiling tile was real, so at half two, when the corridor lights dropped to their night setting, I pulled the chair close and told him what it was for.

Once there was a ladybird called Mrs Pim who kept the dandelion clock on the windowsill of a house with a crooked gate. Every night the seeds wanted to float off with the wind, and every night she had to count them back in, one white parachute at a time, while the cat on the wall pretended he was helping. The cat was called Thursday, because nobody in that house could remember why, and he had a habit of mistaking the hedge for his supper.

The snail was the difficulty. He had been asked to carry the last seed up the drainpipe to the moon, which is a long job for a creature who does everything at the pace of a Sunday, and he had set off at teatime. Mrs Pim said he would never make it before dawn. Thursday said he would, if somebody kept him company, so the three of them went up together, the ladybird counting, the cat yawning, the snail spiralling slowly upward with his shell turned to the stars.

Dev was asleep before the snail reached the gutter. When the day staff came on at seven, the tile above his bed had a thin silver trail across it, and one white seed was caught in the blind, waiting to be counted.
