Dear Nan, the keep roof came down in the thaw, so I have moved my frame into the chapel vestry where the wind cannot take the bobbins. Mr Pryce from the mill at Llanwern sent word that he will pay by the yard for whatever I can make before Candlemas, and he wants a ring of rosettes with pendants hanging from it, like the fringe on a good shawl. I told him I would make it like the wheel of the sky my grandmother drew on the back of the almanac.

Three nights I have worked it. The centre is a star of eight petals, each one pricked with a pin so fine the thread lies like frost. Round it I set a border of tiny dots, forty to a circle, and between them I hung five feathers on loops of seed beads. Mr Pryce says nobody wants feathers. I say the gulls on the mudflats wear them and nobody calls them plain.

Yesterday a boy came up the stair with a pail and asked what I was stitching. I held the lace up to the window and he could not see the threads at all, only the light through them, white as breath on a cold glass. He asked if it would catch dreams. I said only the ones that come in through a window in February.

I am sending the first yard with the carrier on Monday. Keep the almanac safe for me, since the pattern is on its back, and I should like it returned when I come home.
