White geometric hand and wrist tattoos
Geometric · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
A woman in a cream lace-cuffed dress holds her hands together, showing white geometric designs of triangles, diamonds, dots and short lines on the back of the hand and wrist. Faint white dotted lines also appear on the neck above the high collar. The linework is fine and even, and the ink is white rather than black or grey, so it reads as a pale tone against the skin. The soft, muted composition has a blurred green background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction
The lime ran short before the boats were marked, so Mairi Tulloch pressed the last diamond onto the back of her hand with the heel of her palm and let it dry grey on the skin. The island women did this each spring before the fleet went out past the Skerry. A triangle for the wind, a diamond for the net, dots for the herring that might come, short lines for every day the men would be gone. Her grandmother said the marks kept the sea from forgetting whose boat it was.

Her husband Ewan laughed at the custom and rowed out anyway, his own wrist painted white by his sister. He was a careful man who counted his oars aloud and talked to the gulls. On the third night of the gale the sea came up black over the bar, and the women stood on the shingle with paraffin lamps, watching for a sail that did not come. Mairi held her hands up to the light. The marks had survived the tide and the scrubbing of her apron, and they still caught the lamplight like the edge of a shell.
Near dawn a shout came up from the old boathouse, where Tam Ross had sat with his telescope since midnight. Three boats were coming in on the flood, low and heavy, and he could see the lamp in each one. The men later swore they had steered by the pale marks on the women's hands, seen from a mile out in the murk, and had counted the triangles and dots against the chart in their heads like a route home.
Ewan climbed the slipway with his oars on his shoulder and took Mairi's hand without looking at it. His thumb found the diamond and stopped there. Neither of them said anything about it. She let the marks stay until the rain took them, which was not until Thursday.
