Fern tattoo wrapping a lower leg

Botanical · Calf · Black and grey · Photo

A bare lower leg and foot rest on dark grass, with a large black fern tattoo wrapping from the calf down across the ankle. The fronds are solid black with clean edges and some fine detail along the leaflets, and the tattoo is set against the pale skin. The monochrome photograph is framed tightly on the legs, with the tattoo as the main focus.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

By three in the morning the ward has gone soft at the edges, and you are counting drips on bay four when Mrs Okafor's son appears at the doors holding a carrier bag that leaks onto the lino. Inside is a bracken frond cut from the verge outside the station, its leaflets still beaded with rain. He says his mother asked for it, that she wants something green where she can see it. You tell him the sister will have a fit, then take it anyway.

You pin it to the cork board above the sluice hatch with two drawing pins, and the frond throws its shadow across the rota and the fire notice. Its fronds are solid as cut card, every leaflet sharp against the white paper behind. Nobody mentions it through the long stretch of obs and bedpans. Dee, the healthcare assistant, says her gran kept ferns in the coal house so they would stay cool, and you find yourself thinking of a dark garden where things grow without being asked.

At five, when the blinds begin to grey, Mrs Okafor is awake, watching the board from her pillow. She asks you to lift the frond down so she can see the underside, where the spores sit in neat brown rows like print. You hold it up to the window. "Every leaf is the same leaf," she says, "just copied over and over until it's a whole plant." You don't know what to say, so you say nothing and let the light come through.

At handover you write in the notes: bay four, comfortable, asked for green. Then, under it, because the form has no box for this, you write what she said about copies. You put the pen down and go to fill the kettle before anyone can see your face.
