White ink diamond outline on a forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A geometric diamond is drawn in thin white ink on the forearm, with its facets shown by straight lines. A small section of a dark grey tattoo is cut off at the top left edge, so its design cannot be made out. The photo is taken close up against a wooden surface, and the diamond sits near the centre of the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The saline was not on Ward Six, so at ten past three I took the stairs down to the stores with a torch that flickered whenever I thought about it. Nobody works the basement at night except Dev, who signs for the linen and keeps a kettle going on a shelf beside the boiler room door. He was already awake, sitting under a strip light with a magnifier held over a page torn from an old catalogue.

The page showed a brilliant cut diamond, drawn in pencil, every facet numbered in his small square hand. 'Fifty-eight,' he said, before I could ask. 'Most people only remember the sparkle. It's the count that makes it hold the light.' He told me his mother had cleaned offices for a jeweller in Hatton Garden and brought home offcuts of paper with stones sketched on them, and that he had never once seen a real one that close. I said I had seen plenty of stones, mostly on the fingers of frightened people, and he nodded as though that was a fair answer.

I found the saline on the bottom shelf behind a box of gloves, exactly where Dev said it would be. Back on the ward the light was coming grey through the blinds, and Mrs Okonkwo was asleep with one hand open on the blanket. I hung the bag, checked the line, and watched the first sun slant across the sheet, laying one clean pale edge and then another, until there was a diamond there drawn in nothing at all. I counted its sides twice before I let myself go off shift.
