Small black outline diamond tattoo in a fine line style on the inner wrist and lower forearm.

Outline diamond on a wrist

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A small diamond is drawn in black outline on the inner wrist, with its facets shown as simple straight lines. The linework is thin and even, with no shading, and the ink is solid black. The photograph is taken close up at an angle under warm indoor light, with the tattoo placed near the centre of the frame.

Dear Tom,

The lorry broke its fan belt outside Coyote Wells, so I have spent two days in the back room of the Sunbeam Motel waiting for a man called Eddie to bring a part from Blythe. The room smells of diesel and scorched coffee. Through the window the road runs straight as a ruled line until it meets the heat and quits, and I have been watching the trucks come and go as if they might bring something better than news.

Yesterday I walked out past the last fence with the stone Mrs Okafor gave me before she sold up, the one she swore came out of a mine in Namibia and was cut by a man who died before he finished it. I held it up to the sun to see the facets, the way she taught us. Every edge threw a thin white line across the sand, sharp as a scribe's pen. You can't trust a stone with a lazy bevel, she used to say, and I believed her, because nobody lies about angles.

I'm sending you the drawing I made on the back of the motel card, the one with the lines running up to the point. Keep it. When you open the shop in March, put it in the window where the light can get at it, and don't let Marjorie price it by weight. The stone was never the valuable part. It's the only thing on this road that looks exactly like what it is.

Write soon, and tell Dad the belt is fixed, if Eddie ever arrives.

Love, Jo
