Lace and flower band on a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A black ink tattoo forms a band around the forearm, imitating a lace mesh pattern with small daisy-style flowers and thin curling vines. The linework is fine and even, with the mesh filled in densely and the flowers outlined with open centres. The band sits against plain skin on a softly blurred red background, with the tattoo as the clear focus.

The lace came off the bobbins in Mevagissey's back kitchen every winter, and Old Hester Trewin kept the pattern book under a flat stone so the damp wouldn't take it. When the boats were out, the women sat with their pillows in their laps and pins between their teeth, and nobody spoke except to ask for thread. Hester's granddaughter, Nell, was the only one who could not make the daisies sit right. Every flower she pinned came out lopsided, its petals drifting like weed.

One February the nets came home torn and the men went quiet over their pints. Nell took the spare thread to the harbour wall at dusk and tied the end to a mooring ring, then began to work straight onto the cold stone, looping mesh as fine as breath. Her hands went numb and she kept going. By morning there was a band of lace bitten into the granite, flowers opening along a vine that climbed the wall toward the lighthouse.
The fishing fleet came in through the mist that week with every boat accounted for. Hester stood at the wall with her hands folded in her shawl and watched her granddaughter sleep against a bollard. She didn't wake Nell. She only took the pattern book from under its stone and turned to a blank page, and began to draw the flowers the way the child had made them, petals uneven, the vine running wherever it liked.
