Lace and flower band on a forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A forearm bears a band of black tattoo linework resembling lace, with a hexagonal net pattern, small dots and several open flowers with leaves. The lines are fine and even, with the design running across the forearm in a vertical strip. The background is a blurred red, which makes the black ink stand out clearly.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Dearest Hannah, the snow has shut the Coach and Horses since Tuesday, and Mrs Pryce has put the whole household to work with the mending basket because there is nothing else to do. I am writing this by a candle she begrudged me, at the table by the window where the glass has grown a skin of frost. Last night I watched the ice spread from the corners in little hexagons, each one fenced by a fine white line, exactly like the net your grandmother used to pin to her pillow with a hundred bobbins.

The carrier who came in on Monday, the one with the frozen moustache, swore the road over Hartshill was a river of glass, and he has sat by the fire ever since, telling anyone who will listen about a lacemaker in Devizes who sewed a whole wedding veil from her own hair. Nobody believes him, but Mrs Pryce brought out an old cloth from her chest all the same, a band of net with posies worked into it, and laid it across the table like a bridge. She said it came off a coach that never came back for it.

I have been unpicking it all afternoon, counting the dots that sit between the flowers, six to a petal. I think it was made by someone who did not expect to be remembered, and I find I cannot stop counting. Tomorrow the men are digging a path to the lane, and Mrs Pryce says the mail cart will get through if the wind holds off. I am folding the band into this letter so you can see it for yourself. Mind the corners, they are fragile. Your loving sister, Ada.
