White ink paisley tattoo on upper back

Back · Black and grey · Photo

A large ornamental design of paisley swirls, scrolls and a central mandala-like flower is tattooed in white ink across the upper back and shoulder blade. The fine, intricate linework is raised and visible against the skin, with dense detailing in the petals and leaf shapes. The pale ink sits on a warm, lightly tanned background, and the composition runs diagonally from the top of the shoulder down towards the centre of the back.

The milk is already frozen in the churn when you come down, so you carry the kettle out to the yard and pour it over the pump handle until the iron gives. Your grandmother would have done this barehanded. You wear gloves and still curse the cold under your breath the way she taught you, quietly, so the hens don't hear.

Frost has been working on the byre window all night. When the light comes grey over the top field, you find the whole pane covered in the pattern you have been trying to draw for a month: a teardrop curling back on itself, a scroll with a smaller bloom tucked inside it, a flower whose petals are cut so finely they look like lace left out in the weather. You have a sketchbook full of attempts. None of them hold. The frost does it in one breath and gives it back to the glass when the sun reaches it.

Tomasz from the next farm laughs at you for chasing it. He says you can't keep anything that melts. You tell him the stitches your grandmother worked into the altar cloth at St Brannoc's are still there after fifty years, pale thread on bleached linen, and that a thing made with patience doesn't need to stay warm to last.

By noon the window has run clear. You stand with the sketchbook open on the feed bin and draw the last curl from memory, the one that folded back like a wave someone had held still. The pencil takes the line cleanly. Behind you the hens start up again, the yard fills with the ordinary noise of morning, and you keep drawing until your fingers are too stiff to hold the pencil.
