Pale floral design across upper back
Botanical · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A pale, light-toned floral design of leaves, flowers and curling vines spreads across the upper back over the shoulder blade. The fine outlines are delicate and even, with little or no shading, so the design reads as light ink against the skin. The palette is limited to skin tones, and the composition runs diagonally from the shoulder towards the centre of the back, with a dark navy top along the lower edge of the frame.

The leaves came up the stairwell of Calder House the summer the council sent Ivo up with a tin of lime wash and a brush meant for the graffiti. Nobody had asked him to paint vines. He said the walls told him where they wanted the curls, and he worked floor by floor from the bottom, lightly, so the old tags still showed through like ghosts under the new white.

My gran lived on the ninth floor and insisted the pattern was a map. She traced the scrolls with one finger on the landing and said they led down to the canal, where the first tenants had grown beans on the bank before anyone built anything taller than a chimney. I thought she was making it up until the August the lift broke and I carried her shopping up nine flights, counting leaves to keep my breath going. By the fifth floor I had stopped counting and started following the stems.
The demolition notice went up in October. Men with clipboards measured the stairwells and wrote numbers across Ivo's work in red marker. Gran refused to leave until someone let her see the pattern one last time, so I took her down with a torch, and in that low light the lime wash caught the grain of the concrete and every curl stood up off the wall as if it had been pressed in from behind.
She laid her palm flat on a fern near the bottom step and said, there, that's the root, the rest is only branches. I didn't understand until the week the wrecking ball came, when I went back alone and found the rain had smudged the marker numbers away, leaving the leaves clean and pale, a line of sprigs climbing out of the rubble towards the canal path.
