Pale botanical linework across a shoulder
Fine line · Shoulder · Black and grey · Photo
The design is a botanical arrangement of leaves, stems, a small flower and curling tendrils, drawn in thin, even lines. The linework is pale and sits lightly on the skin, with no shading or solid fills visible. The motif spreads diagonally from the top of the shoulder towards the collarbone, with a dark navy top along the lower edge of the frame.

The rain had settled over Saltergate market since first light, and by ten the stallholders had given up calling to the shoppers. Nell Harrow kept her tray of creepers under a tarpaulin behind the eel stall, where the drip could not reach them. A girl came round the back with water running off her hood and asked for something that would not die in a month of wet weather.

Nell unwrapped a length of pale stem from the sacking. It had no colour to speak of, only leaves as thin as tissue and tendrils that curled when the air moved. 'Water it with rain and nothing else,' she said. 'Never bring it under a lamp after dark, and never let anyone trace it with a finger, or it will climb wherever the finger went.' The girl paid with a brass button instead of coins and tucked the cutting inside her coat, against her ribs, where the warmth would keep it.
Nell thought no more of it until the following Wednesday, when the tarpaulin was grey with rain and she found the tray pulled full of new growth overnight. Fine lines ran across the wet sacking in every direction, leaves and small flowers drawn in a pale ink that would not wipe away. They curled towards the river road, the way the girl had gone.
Nell kept the tarpaulin tied down after that and stopped calling out to the shoppers. Each Wednesday a little more pale growth crept along the riverward side, and no one in Saltergate ever found the path it had walked.
