White ink floral lace on a shoulder

Botanical · Shoulder · Black and grey · Photo

The tattoo is a scrolling floral and paisley-style pattern with flower heads, swirls and small dots, rendered in light, almost white ink. The fine linework is soft and the pattern covers the shoulder blade and upper back, with the strongest detail near the centre. Because the ink is pale against tan skin, the design reads as a raised or embossed texture rather than a dark tattoo.

Dear Hetty, the snow has shut the Crown's lane for four days now, and Mr Ogden says the pass won't open before Thursday. I've taken to walking the upstairs passage with a candle to keep my hands busy. Every window on the landing has grown frost overnight, and this morning the pattern on the glass was the paisley your mother used to stitch on the christening linen: a flower head, then a swirl curling off it like a fern uncurling, and little dots of white scattered between, as if someone had flicked a brush.

I tried to copy it onto the back of the bill book before the sun took it. I got the flower right and lost the swirl. Bet, who helps in the kitchen, watched me over the flour and said her gran called that sort of thing lace-work, that you could breathe on a pane and the pattern would come back. So I breathed, and it did. Then I breathed on the pane in room seven, where the traveller with the cough is lying, and the frost there made a vine of ivy leaves that climbed right up to the sash, which I did not like at all.

Mr Ogden came up to look and said nothing for a long while. Then he told me the house was built by a lacemaker's widow who wanted her work on every window so the place would never go cold. I asked him if he believed that. He said he believed the frost did what it liked, and we were only the people who had to wipe the glass.

I've left the landing window alone. Come in March if the roads allow, and bring the linen. Your loving sister, Agnes.
