The ash on Gull Head had been dying for three winters, or so the council letters said, and Dora Penhale had stopped answering them. She climbed the path at low tide with a coil of rope over one shoulder and a tin of lime wash knocking against her hip, because her father used to say that a tree whose roots you had never seen was a tree you did not understand.

Below the path the harbour wall ran grey and furred with weed, and the ash's roots came down the bank like fingers gripping stone. She lowered herself onto the rocks and followed one root with her palm. Salt had bleached it pale as chalk. Where it entered the wall, a crack ran upward through the mortar, and someone had stuffed rags into it decades ago. The rags had rotted to lace, but the root had gone on past them, down into the dark where the stone was still sound.

The surveyor, a thin man called Haskett, wanted the tree felled before the spring tides. He had marked it on his plans as a hazard. Dora took his pencil and drew beneath the tree the wall, the chapel cellar, and a thin line between them showing where the roots held everything together. He laughed until she took him down the steps to the cellar. It was dry for the first time since the flood of 1953, because the roots had drawn the water out of the bank.

She dipped her brush in the lime and painted a ring around the trunk where it met the path, a circle as pale as the salt on the stones. "Measure from there," she said. He did, and the letters stopped.
