Light ink tribal-style motif with spirals
Other · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo shows a symmetrical motif of two spiral scrolls above a curved, shield-like form with a central dot and two small teardrop shapes below. The linework is solid and the design appears in a pale, low-contrast ink, possibly white or very light grey, that sits faintly against the skin. The composition is centred, with a bright light source blurred at the top left.

Dust had got into everything by the time Ruth reached the crossroads at Sabra Wells, so she bought the mask from the old man at the petrol pump without haggling. It was carved from pale mesquite and rubbed with a wash of chalk, two scrolls curling up from its brow like fern tips, a round hollow at its centre, and below that a shield of worked lines ending in two beads of white. "It keeps the glare off the windscreen," he said. She laughed, because the sun was already going down and there was nothing left to keep off.

She drove north with the mask wedged against the sun visor, its chalk catching the headlights every time the road bent. The radio gave out past Coyote Tank. In the silence she began to talk to it the way she used to talk to Dell in the cab, about the price of diesel and the hay bales she'd passed, and somewhere after midnight she noticed the chalk had worn thin along the lower edge, as if something had been seeping through it.
At the next town she took a room above a shuttered diner and found a receipt tucked behind the visor, written in pencil in a hand she didn't recognise: Turn it to face the road, not the driver. She laughed again, then did as it said. By morning the highway ran pale and straight ahead of her, and the tyre tracks she'd left in the sand the night before had already filled over with wind.
