White ink floral swirls on skin
Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo shows a cluster of stylised flowers with teardrop petals, linked by thin curling tendrils and small dots. The linework is fine and even, and the design is rendered in pale white ink rather than dark pigment. The tattoo sits on a lightly lit area of skin with a faint pinkish redness around the lines, and the composition spreads the motif diagonally across the frame.

The fair came up the valley road every September with its painted horses and its one lame camel, and every year the old ferryman's daughter sold pressed flowers at the gate for a penny each. That year a boy from the carousel crew bought three of them and paid in buttons. He said he would come back for the rest when the lights were down.

He did not come back. The fair packed up on the Sunday and went over the hill in a long grey line, and the girl stood at the gate until the last wagon was gone. Her mother said the boy had likely been sent to the next town with a bad leg and a worse temper. Her father said nothing, but he went down to the river that night and came back with a jar of white clay and a bone-handled pin.
She drew on her own forearm with the pale clay, flowers with drop-shaped petals, tendrils that curled off like wood shavings, a scatter of dots for the seeds. It took her until the moon was over the chapel. In the morning the marks had sunk into the skin and gone faint, but when she held her arm to the window the lines still showed, lit from underneath like frost on a pane.
The next September she sat at the gate again with her flowers. When the first wagon came over the rise she held out her arm, and the carousel boy, grown thin and older, stopped dead in the road and looked at it for a long time before he took off his cap.
