The pocket watch came off the 4.12 wrapped in a spotted handkerchief, with a note pinned to its chain that read only: Keep it until I'm late. Ada Penhallow ran lost property from a cupboard beside the ticket barrier at Thornbury Junction. She had sorted umbrellas, dentures and one stuffed heron, but nothing like this. The back was engraved with a small spade, and the chain carried a gold charm no bigger than a shirt button.

The face was the thing. A white rabbit looked out from the dial, grey-shaded ears folded back, amber eyes fixed on the middle of the room as if it too were waiting for the train. Roman numerals ringed it. The spade-tipped hands sat at twenty past nine. Ada checked the station clock above platform two. It read twenty past nine. She was not a woman who believed in coincidence before her second cup of tea, so she wrote the watch into the ledger under unclaimed and put it on the shelf.

By Friday it had moved twice without her touching it, once to her desk and once to the teapot handle, the chain looped round the spout. On Saturday a man in a grey overcoat came to the hatch, glanced at his own wristwatch and said he feared he was rather late. She handed it over. He pressed the charm between finger and thumb, smiled at the rabbit and said, "Don't wait up."

He walked out onto platform two, where the 9.40 was drawing in although it had been cancelled that morning. Ada wrote Collected beside the entry, then looked up. The station clock had started again, four minutes slow.
