Wildflower bouquet tied with twine on upper arm
Botanical · Upper arm · Mixed · Photo
A bouquet of wildflowers and grasses is tied at the stem with twine, with a red-orange poppy-like flower at the upper left and a lavender-style spike above it. Fine, dark grey linework outlines the stems and leaves, with soft green and grey shading giving the foliage depth. The bouquet runs diagonally up the inner arm against plain skin.

Dear Tom,

The frost has held the top field since Tuesday, so I've been breaking the ice on the trough twice a day, which your grandfather would have called a waste of a good morning. I'm sending you the bouquet from the kitchen windowsill. You'll remember the poppies went up in June along the headland, the ones Bert said were weeds and I said were the only sensible thing growing on that ground. I cut them the day before the baler broke down and tied them with the orange twine from the shed, the same way we did the hay.
The lavender came from the bed by the gate, the grey stuff that never stopped buzzing. The grasses I picked from the ditch on the Ashby road, where you used to fall in and come home wet to the knees. I've kept it upright in the jar all winter, but the poppy has gone papery and the stems have dried to the colour of old pennies. I thought it would be a shame to throw it out when it still looks like something.
Don't come up for Christmas if the roads are bad. I'd rather you were warm in London than sitting in a lay-by outside Shrewsbury. Ring me on Sunday, same time as always, and tell me whether the new flat has a window that opens. The bouquet is yours now. I've wrapped it in a page of the Farmers Weekly so it won't crack in the post.
Love, Nan
