Wine glass tattoo on a forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Mixed · Photo

A small wine glass with a stem and foot sits on the inner forearm, its bowl outlined in black with a red fill showing wine level. The linework is fine and even, with simple flat colour and no shading. The two photos show the same tattoo from slightly different angles, with the glass centred on the arm against a plain background.

The order came in on the back of a beer mat, in pencil: one glass, stem and foot, with the wine to sit exactly at the line drawn beneath. Mr Abernethy read it at the bench of the Thornley glassworks and passed it along to Denise, who had the steadiest hands in the valley and no time for riddles.

Denise blew the bowl on a Thursday, annealed it overnight in the cooling oven, and tested it with water from the sink. She marked the line with a diamond scribe, checked it, then checked it again, because the customer had been precise in a way that made her uneasy. Mrs Pollard of the Crown came in on Saturday with a bottle of claret tucked under one arm and watched the level climb to the scratch without a word.

Afterwards she sat in the window seat of the public bar, pouring from the bottle exactly to the mark and no further. She talked about the weather, the price of coal and a nephew in Leeds, and never once lifted the glass until the light had gone out of the square and the lamps came on across the road. Denise, left to close up, watched from the doorway as the red held perfectly still against the glass.

When the bottle was empty, Mrs Pollard set the glass on the sill, turned it a quarter turn so the scratch faced the room, and went home. In the morning the wine was still there, untouched, the line as sharp as the day it was cut.
