The roses on the east wall have finally given up, though not all at once, which is how I know they meant it. Old Hollis says the climber was planted by the last lady of Carrow before the roof came down, and for two hundred years it has kept flowering over the broken arch as if nobody had told it the house was gone. This week only one bloom is left, hanging from its thin stem by its own weight, head bowed like a pupil sent to stand in the corner.

I tried to lift it with the secateurs yesterday and the stem would not hold up its own flower. The two leaves at the top have gone the colour of pewter, and the petals have that soft pink and red you only get at the very end, when they start to bruise into their own shadows. I could have cut it for the vase in the hall, but I left it where it hung. Hollis says a rose that droops like that is asking to be looked at from below, and I suppose that is what I have been doing all week, standing under it with my head tipped back.

On Thursday the wind came off the sea and took the petals one at a time, laying them along the path to the chapel, and I followed them like a fool with a basket. At the chapel door there was a stone with its name worn away and a single pink petal stuck to its edge. I have pressed that petal in your old hymn book. Come up at the end of the month if you can, before the rain takes the rest. I want you to see the stem before it is bare.
