Winged angel tattoo on upper back
Back · Black and grey · Photo
A black and grey tattoo of a winged angel figure sits on the upper back, to the side of the spine, with the wings spreading outward. The shading is soft and layered, with darker outlines and lighter grey tones suggesting feathers and clouds. The warm skin tone and white lace trim of the open-back top frame the tattoo against the rest of the back.

Sit closer, the brazier is dying and the night is long. Hear now how the painter Teodor came up the hill to Sardis with a pot of lampblack on his back and a boy named Ilan carrying his brushes, because the temple wall above the gate had cracked and the priests wanted a messenger painted there before the autumn fairs. Teodor was no fool, but he was a man who had never once looked up at the sky he painted.

He began with the wings. Ilan asked him why they must spread so wide, and the painter said a messenger's wings must look as if they could lift the whole wall off its stones and carry it over the river. He worked the clouds in chalk and soot, one thin layer over another, darkening the edges where the feathers would fall. Each evening Ilan swept the lime dust from the steps and each morning the cloud-shadows had crept a finger's width further toward the gate, though the painter swore he had not touched them.
On the last night of the work a storm came over the hills, and Ilan woke to find the wall streaming and the wings gone grey where the rain had reached them. Teodor was not in his bed. His brushes lay in a neat row on the step, washed clean, the bristles pointing toward the gate. The priests say the angel still stands there, wings half open above the arch, and that the swallows who nest beneath them have to fly a little lower each spring. Keep your hands warm, child. Wings are heavier than they look.
